Language learning is an important part of our learning philosophy. We believe that learning a language is essential to understanding the world and to appreciate the subtleties of cultural differences. At the College, language learning goes beyond speaking, listening, reading and writing to involve workshops and activities that immerse students in the richness of the culture.
At the College all students study a comprehensive Mandarin language programme. Mandarin will be taught as a foreign, second and native language and will be streamed according to ability, from absolute beginner to native speaker. Senior School students will also have the opportunity to learn French or Spanish as they approach their exam years.
Dulwich College Yangon fully recognises the language and culture of its host country. Myanmar Studies lessons are provided for all Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 students (aged 5-11). The College will also offer an additional Myanmar language programme for those students already proficient in the language, allowing them to build expertise in their mother tongue.
Our students come from a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. We are able to support a percentage of students who are non-native English speakers. Students who require additional English language teaching to access the curriculum are provided with English as an Additional Language (EAL) support. Working closely with the class and subject teachers, our language specialists help students develop the skills necessary to complete their school work in English and benefit fully from all the College has to offer.
